So yesterday, an interesting event occured, and I felt I need to discuss it. A neighbour of mine who has been speaking out against some of the abuses being perpetrated by the landlord where we live, was forcefully removed by security he had hired, than forced to let this neighbour back into his unit after the Police made it very clear that the entire thing was illegal.
And it really made me realize how much the power someone like this has can truly corrupt them. Now I don’t know if he understood that this was illegal or not but, I could have easily told him it was, but that’s because I’ve studied the landlord tenant act here in Ontario. But the situation, and absolute undeserved confidence, are sickening.
The landlord moved his own property into the basement of the house this neighbour occupies, and tried to claim the neighbour was a boarder (he is a legal tenant, not a boarder, complete with lease), than hired some security guards to FORCE the neighbour out, and promptly replaced the locks. I am very glad the police here were able to sort this out for my neighbour, as it could have ended very badly otherwise.
But this leads me to believe that either the landlord was woefully uninformed as to the laws here in Ontario (which may be the case as he lives in California), or he simply didn’t care. It would seem the maintenance guy who works for him, believes he understood the laws, and was hoping that my neighbour would just back down and “not know his rights”.
